Did Singapore just slip into a chopping frenzy or what? Yes, I'm referring to the 2nd dismembered body murder case. In case you're asking "What 2nd dismembered body?", a women's head, arms and legs were found in a blue sports bags in the midst of our concrete jungle — Orchard Road — between the park (yes, the park where countdown parties are held annually) & a mosaic wall. A female torso was then found on a pathway at MacRitchie Reservoir. (The murderer must have owned a vehicle for him to be able to transport the body parts around.)
Just as I was reading the proof of one of the pages to be published today last night, my colleague told me, "Eh! Better go home early. Don't wander around." His words sent a cold shiver down my back. Damn! Singaporeans are really getting freaky these days. First, they like to jump off MRT tracks (suicide cases all over MRT stations in Singapore), then they throw people down buildings (Constance Chee's case). And now, they chop people up & dump them like any other rubbish (Liu Hong Mei & this current case).
While the government has focused on security & countermeasures for terrorism, have they overlooked the hearts of the heartlanders? Why was it so easy for the murderer to leave such a conspicuous sports bag in the middle of Orchard Road? I thought the purpose of having fully-armed & fearful-looking police officers patrolling up & down the streets is to look out for suspicious articles or subjects? It had to be a cleaner that discovered the abandoned bag. It is indeed very daring of the murderer to leave the bag in the heart of Singapore where thousands of people pass-by. Or was the murderer simply riding on the nonchalance of Singaporeans to everything & anything around them?
While there are skeptical voices about the security in Singapore & level of efficiency in the local police, I choose to believe that Singapore is still a safe place (because it's just too small for anything to be hidden away from the eyes of the government), but I probably have to rely more on myself to safeguard myself from lurking dangers.
Just as I'm typing this, a Filipina worker has been nabbed in relation to the murder. Let's just wait & see while the whole case unfolds.
